New Zealand now has seven official dark sky places! The Kawarau Gibbston Dark Sky Park was designated by DarkSky International in May. The protected area covers 25 square kilometres and is located between Queenstown and Cromwell in the Queenstown-Lakes District of Otago.

The Gibbston Community Association developed the application for certification after unanimous community approval at their AGM in June 2023. Rose Cross, Chair of the Association, said that “The Gibbston Community Association was founded in 1999 with the mission to protect, preserve, and promote the unique characteristics of Gibbston as an area of special character. Today, 25 years on, we have taken the next step in that endeavour."

The park is protected by a unique geography of gorges and high mountains. By day, visitors can enjoy the region's famous wineries then be treated to a dazzling display of stars at night. DarkSky International said that "Such certifications help mitigate development impacts, ensuring residents and visitors can enjoy naturally dark skies for years to come."

Congratulations to everyone involved in this outstanding achievement!
